Descriptions for One Quantitative Variable Distributions

Describing the distribution of one quantitative variable means covering four features in one pass: shape (symmetric, skewed with the tail naming the direction, unimodal, bimodal, or approximately uniform), center (a typical value), variability (how spread out the values run), and unusual features (outliers, gaps, clusters). Every clause is delivered in context with units, because a description that never names the variable or its units is a caption for a picture, not a statement about data. From a graph, center and variability are ballpark readings, and that is fine: defensible ballparks in context beat precise numbers about nothing.

The two traps are omission and reversal. Omission: answering 'the average is about 14' and stopping, or reciting shape-center-spread while skipping the outlier and the gap, or writing a technically correct description that never says what was measured. Reversal: naming skew after the pile of data instead of the tail, calling a bimodal distribution skewed, or stretching 'symmetric' to cover anything with one peak. The fix is mechanical: sweep shape, center, variability, unusual features, in units, and name skew by asking where the thin tail points.
