Grid-In Mechanics
A quarter of the math section takes typed answers, and the field grades characters, not intentions. The points leak in the form, a mixed number entered with a space and read as a different value, a percent or dollar symbol trying to come along, a negative sign left on scratch paper, and in the precision: a repeating decimal cut to two digits, an exact decimal rounded, or time burned reducing a fraction that already scores.
These patterns aren't really about math at all. They're about a handful of mechanical entry rules (no mixed numbers, no symbols, fill the field, reduction optional) that take ten minutes to learn once and cost points forever when they stay unlearned.

Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions or decimals before entering, type bare numbers in the asked units with signs intact, fill repeating decimals or dodge them with the fraction, and never spend time reducing. The lesson works the protocol and the two patterns it prevents, and it saves the trap for last: the right value typed in a form the field cannot read.
