Spring launcher: compression, peak height, and a sealed cartridge

Fling a payload straight up off a spring, then use your own data to measure the stiffness of a spring you never see.

The situation

A spring stands in a vertical tube. Compress it by a distance x, seat a payload of mass m on top, and release: the spring flings the payload straight up. A peak marker on the rail beside the tube latches at the very top of the flight and reads the height of the latch above the launch point, in centimeters. Below you will get a working rig with three knobs: the compression x, the payload mass m, and how long you hold the spring compressed before you let go.

First, commit to a prediction. Then the apparatus unlocks.

Which changes make the peak marker latch higher? Check all you expect to.
Plot peak height versus compression. What shape do you expect?
