AP Physics 1 Score Calculator

Enter your MCQ raw score (out of 40) and your four FRQ raw scores to estimate a predicted AP Physics 1 score from 1 to 5. The calculator uses the 2026 exam format: 40 multiple choice items (50% of the composite) and four free response questions worth 10, 12, 10, and 8 points respectively (50% of the composite). College Board sets the official curve after each administration, so treat this as a practice estimate, not a guarantee.

2026 format · 40 MCQ + 4 FRQ

Multiple choice Section I / 40
FRQ 1: Mathematical Routines / 10
FRQ 2: Translation Between Representations / 12
FRQ 3: Experimental Design and Analysis / 10
FRQ 4: Qualitative / Quantitative Translation / 8

How this calculator works

Method

01

Equal-weight scaling

Each section is scaled to 50% of the composite. The 2026 redesign weights MCQ and FRQ equally regardless of raw point totals.

02

FRQ section total

Four FRQs scored out of 10, 12, 10, and 8 points respectively, for 40 raw FRQ points. The MCQ section also totals 40 raw points.

03

Cut score estimates

Score band thresholds reflect approximate composite percentages seen in past releases. College Board sets the official curve each year and it shifts slightly.

04

Treat as a target

Use the prediction to set a buffer above your goal band. A composite that just clears a threshold can drop a tier if the curve tightens.

Want to push your score up?

The fastest way to move a 3 to a 4 is targeted misconception remediation, not more practice problems. Mistake Master diagnoses exactly which physics misconceptions are costing you points, then drills only those.

Common questions

FAQ

What composite score do I need for a 5?

Approximately 70% of total composite points typically maps to a 5. That works out to roughly 28 out of 40 on multiple choice plus 28 of 40 on the free response section, or some combination that totals around 56 out of 80 raw points. College Board adjusts the curve each year, so treat this as a floor target rather than a fixed line.

How is the AP Physics 1 exam scored?

Section I (multiple choice) and Section II (free response) each count for 50% of the composite. Multiple choice items are 1 point each with no penalty for guessing and four answer choices per question. FRQs are scored by trained readers against published rubrics; partial credit is available throughout.

Is there a penalty for guessing on MCQ?

No. The College Board scores multiple choice on raw correct answers only. Always fill in an answer for every question, even if you have to guess.

What changed for the 2025 and 2026 exams?

Starting with the 2024 to 2025 school year, AP Physics 1 dropped from 50 multiple choice questions to 40, dropped from 5 free response questions to 4, removed multi-select MCQ items, reduced answer choices from 5 to 4, and reorganized FRQs into four named task types: Mathematical Routines, Translation Between Representations, Experimental Design and Analysis, and Qualitative / Quantitative Translation. Fluids was added as a tested unit.

Can I use a calculator on AP Physics 1?

Yes. A scientific or graphing calculator is permitted on both sections. The official equation and constants sheet is also provided on both sections of the exam.

How accurate is this score calculator?

The composite math is exact. The 1 to 5 prediction is approximate because College Board does not publish exact cut scores and adjusts them each year. Use the calculator to track relative progress on practice exams rather than to commit to a specific number.
