The Current That Creeps Up

You'll learnwhat a coil does to a circuit: the current starts at zero, creeps up to a value a plain resistor rule gives, and refuses to stop when the switch opens.

Close a switch on a battery, a resistor and a big coil. The current does not jump: it starts at exactly zero and creeps up. And when you open the switch again, the coil does something dramatic about it. Twelve short steps; press Next for each one.

12 STEPS · 6 QUICK CHECKS · STARTS AT ZERO · ENDS A WIRE · THE 120-VOLT GOODBYE · v2

starts at zero, ends a wire · and it will not be switched off quietly
Before you start
What you're looking at
A battery, a switch, a resistor and a big coil in one loop, with a plot of the current against time beside it.
The question
What does the current do when the switch closes, and when it opens again?
