The Thermometer Is Not the Answer

You'll learnto turn a temperature change into reaction heat with q = mcΔT and a sign reversal.

A coffee cup, a thermometer, and one number that moves. Calorimetry turns that moving number into an energy, but only if you bring the other two factors with it and then flip the sign on the way from the solution to the reaction. Twelve short steps; press Next for each one.

12 STEPS · 6 QUICK CHECKS · q = mcΔT · qrxn = −qsoln · v5

three factors, then one minus sign

What you're looking at
A coffee-cup calorimeter in cutaway, its thermometer climbing from 22.0 °C to 28.2 °C as something dissolves in the water.
The question
The thermometer moved 6.2 degrees — is that the heat?
