Follow the Electrons

Drop a strip of zinc into blue copper solution and the strip goes dark while the blue drains away. Nothing was poured in, nothing bubbled off. What crossed was electrons — two of them, from each zinc atom to each copper ion. And they never travel one way only: the instant one species lets go, another catches. Oxidation and reduction are two names for one event.
