Write CaCl2(aq), 1.0 M. Draw the particles. Describe the beaker on the bench. Those are three representations of the same reality, and they are not allowed to disagree. The drawing is where the disagreement usually starts — because the formula says CaCl2, and students draw exactly that: a little CaCl2 unit, bobbing along in the water. There is no such thing in that beaker.
